What is Boskos?

African wild herbivores have been freely roaming the African continent for thousands of years. In the past 80 years the advent of modern farming has restricted the free traversing of land and natural migration. Today, free roaming savanna plains have been reduced to smaller encamped farms and reserves. As a result, wildlife is now restricted to reduced ranges and requires supplemental feeding. The concept of BOSKOS (Bush feed) was born in 1992 and was based on the fact that the Acacia fibre (Vachellia fibre) species of bush is the natural feed of many wild herbivores.

Vast areas of Southern Africa have been encroached upon by Vachellia Fibre (Acacia) bushes due to the bad practises previously used in commercial farming. WES Enterprises has developed methods of harvesting these Vachellia bushes, thereby rehabilitating the areas, and utilising the foliage in the production of BOSKOS. Carefully selected raw materials and pre-mixes are also added into the feed mix. This forms a natural wild animal feed which closely resembles the herbivore’s natural diet.

Benefits & Advantages OF FEEDING BOSKOS

The formulation of BOSKOS complements the natural grazing and browsing habits of wild herbivores, where they thrive on a diet high in good quality natural fibre

BOSKOS is a feed that comprises quality browse fibre, the Vachellia (Acacia) fibre. The Vachellia fibre fractions are known as polygonal fibres, which do not stratify in the rumen and therefore are easier for the animal to digest and contain pre-biotics

The unique composition of BOSKOS reduces metabolic stress to the animals as they assimilate BOSKOS to their natural diets due to the fact that it is formulated around the use of Vachellia fibre (Acacia)

All proteins added are natural proteins and no animal by-products or chemicals are used in the production of BOSKOS. BOSKOS is a fixed recipe formulation. This is a major benefit when feeding wild animals as the rumen does not have to adapt to the continuous changes of raw materials

Wild animals do not choose their feed wisely, therefore a complete diet like BOSKOS is preferable and safe, even on an ad-lib basis

LAND REHABILITATION

BOSKOS was born out of the need to rehabilitate large tracts of previously good farming land, located in the nutritious grazing savanna landscapes in southern Africa. For centuries the commercial overgrazing of these lands has resulted in a devastating encroachment by indigenous thorn-bush, formerly known as Acacia, now Vachellia. This is the natural feed of wild herbivores, but the encroachment is problematic towards domestic livestock farming.

The rehabilitation process results in re-establishing the savanna landscape, which enables the reintroduction of livestock farming, in turn creating many job opportunities & improving the living standards within the community. For thousands of years wild herbivores roamed Africa intimately in search of food & nutrients, however civilization & modern agricultural practices have reduced their free roaming plains to captivity on farms & reserves, hence human-management has become vitally important.

Individuals & institutions around the world have made concerted efforts to share in these natural wonders of Africa by relocating many of the various African Herbivore species. WES Enterprises, is proud of its achievement of bringing to these relocated herbivores their natural feed in the form of BOSKOS.

Changing lives and landscapes in Africa, by bringing BOSKOS to other countries around the world
